Berea Man Arrested for Using Tractor to Retrieve Ball from Groundhog Hole
Four under par, one very smug groundhog, and a post hole digger later, the Berea Country Club's sixth hole will never be the same.
BEREA — It was a day filled with sunny skies and green fairways at the Berea Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.
It was a picture-perfect day for golf, and all was peaceful, until a Berea man was arrested after trying to retrieve his ball from a groundhog hole with his tractor.
Carl Spackler, 42, told police he was having the game of his life until a groundhog emerged from the ground and stole his ball.
“I was four under par when I got to the sixth hole. That's when that little shit groundhog got up from his hole, looked me dead in the eyes and grinned before he stole my ball and jumped right back into his hole with it,” Spackler explained.
“I decided to leave the golf course and go back home to the farm to hook up my post hole digger to the back of the tractor and drill into the ‘little bastard's' home to get my ball back from him.”

Spackler was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon and charged with disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct, possession of a firearm, illegal possession of explosive materials, and attempted murder of an animal, after he drove his tractor through a residential area and onto the greens in pursuit of the groundhog.
